The first volume focused on landscape and figure subjects, this book catalogues more than 200 oils and watercolors that date from the beginning of Sargent's training in Paris. These include studio works and plein air studies that chart Sargent's development as an artist and record the many places he traveled in these years -- Paris, Brittany, Capri, Spain, North Africa and Venice among them. The 446 pages explore the variety of Sargent's works outside portraiture over these eight years, including figures in landscape settings, architectural studies, interiors, street scenes, seascapes, subject paintings and studies after old masters.
