With a heavy heart we share the news that the artist Winfred Rembert passed away on Wednesday, March 31, 2021. Winfred had been struggling with long term illnesses, but he ultimately passed on his own terms: at home beside his beloved wife, Patsy, and their children. Since 2010, the Adelson and Rembert families have grown very close. We have gotten to know Winfred as a loving member of his family, friends, and community. His presence is magnetic. His laughter is contagious. His voice captures and holds you until you are crying or smiling or both.

We know Winfred Rembert to be a powerful symbol of grit and resolve in a painful portion of American history and present-day culture. His survival and perseverance in the face of racism and suffering has inspired anyone that has heard his story or looked at his artwork. His medium of choice, carved and tooled leather, is distinct and represents an important characteristic of Winfred’s attitude. Each stroke of the hammer is made deliberately and with purpose. There’s no erasing the marks left behind on the leather hide. Every imperfection is out there in the open, and he’s proud to show them. Like scars on skin, the intricate leather compositions tell intimate stories about Winfred’s life. A hero to so many of us, his memory and influence lives on in these works of art, and his story will continue to be told.

The Adelson family sends our deepest condolences, love and continued support to the Rembert family. We are so grateful to have been a part of his life and story. Please read more on his life in the article below.
