Sargent Abroad: An Exhibition
Adelson Galleries is pleased to present Sargent
Abroad: An Exhibition opening November 7 through
December 13, 1997. The exhibition will provide the first
serious examination of landscape and figure subjects
painted by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) between 1900
and 1914 when Sargent, then an established painter known
for his society portraits, traveled regularly throughout
Europe. Adelson Galleries will be the only venue for this
exceptional exhibition.
The exhibition will consist of more than 55 important
oil and watercolor paintings, many of which are privately
owned, including several from the Sargent family, that
have never or rarely been seen by the public; others are
on loan from museum collections including The
Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts,
Boston, and The Brooklyn Museum of Art. A catalogue of
the exhibition is available with 20 color plates and a
complete checklist with 58 entries. Also included in this
exhibition will be a group of recently discovered
watercolors by John Singer Sargent's sister, Emily
Sargent. Emily was Sargent's traveling and painting
companion, as well as a model for many of his works.
This exhibition coincides with the Abbeville Press
publication of a book entitled Sargent Abroad: Figures
and Landscapes, written by noted Sargent scholars:
Warren Adelson, Donna Seldin Janis, Elaine Kilmurray,
Richard Ormond, and Elizabeth Oustinoff.
During Sargent Abroad: An Exhibition, Adelson
Galleries will be open to the public Monday to Friday,
9:30-5:30, and on Saturdays from 10:00-5:00.
